DENIVA ELECTS NEW BOARD FOR 2013-2016




Development Network of Indigenous Voluntary Associations (DENIVA) hosted the 21st AGM and elected a new Board of Directors for the next three years 2013- 2016. Over 300 members attended the two days  meeting  on 4th Monday- 5th Tuesday November 2013 . the members also   held  an  Alternative peoples parliament on the POMA, public order management Act on the second day of the meeting.
By the end of the First  day, CSOs had elected the following Board Members:
1.      Ms Nakintu Jane             Board chairperson
2.      Dr. Bagambe Stephen    vice chairperson
3.      Mr. Adomati Cosmas      Board secretary
4.      Ms. Itungo Medius          Board Treasurer
5.      Ms. Angiro Betty              Board member representing the North
6.      Mr. Daniel Opio                Board member representing the East
7.      Mr. Rueben Mbauta        Board member representing the south
8.      Mr.Muyingo Henry          Board   member representing the central
9.      Ms. Monica Emiru            Board member representing the National CSOs 
Professor Kwesiga was the presding Electoral chairperson who facilitated the election process alongside DENIVA staff.
On the second day of the peoples Alternative parliament Hon Kivumbu Mwanga from Butambala oriented the CSOs about the background of the public order management act and asked the CSOs to invest a lot more in research to effectively advocate against the narrowing space for CSOs expression. Other presenters were Akampurira Justus a member of Maker ere students guild who shared about the harassment of the students during a demonstration, Ms, Agnes Namusitwa from Kakuuto Network of indigenous Associations (KANIVA) also narrated how she was beaten in the District for disseminating the black Monday papers.
According to council Opio Nicholas, CSOS  should   be prepared for arrests at one time and must be handy with a lawyer as the public order and management Act still has areas that may work against the CSOs.
 By the end of the meeting the CSOs resolved to:
1 To continue challenging the gaps in the POMA until the constitution is upheld
2. Denouncing the sections of the POMA which are unconstitutional and petition the constitutional court on the law
3. Jointly advocating on issues that affect the masses, operating as a unit
4. Proceed with sensitization of the public on the POMA
5 Join networks of human rights defenders, democracy activists
6. Keep energized and motivated to CSOs work without fear or favor.
Being no other business  meeting was  at 3:30pm
