“This information has
come at a right time”.
This was revealed by Ms Tabita Oliva a member of BYEAH a community development group during a sensitization meeting held at Kirumya sub county headquarters.
The meeting was held on 11th august 2016. In the sensitization meeting
members concentrated on the impact of the post election conflicts and what
communication action can be put in place to prevent the occurrence of further
confrontation in the area.
During
the meeting, the members’ brain stormed on the actors and the causes in order
to give a basis on what action can be taken. The actors were categorized as;
government action, political leaders’ speeches and interests that community may
not understand, the establishment of cultural institutions, the issues related
to land ownership, false information from individual claiming to be working
either for the government and the cultural institutions and some individual who
may have some influence in the community.
The role of each of the above actors
has influenced the occurrence of events in the district. In order to understand
the role of the actors, determining the level of individual influence; his/her
position in the community and his/her interest in the action or conflict.
One Balija Joseph a 56 year old resident of Kirumya narrated how the Bamba and the
Bakonzo supported and collaborated with each other. “… today some people are working to ensure that we don’t even eat from the
families of our brothers..”.
The
community action recommended were; analyze actors before they support them, support
the good government and individual programs that work towards poverty
elaviation, get rightful information from the right source and determine if the
information is beneficial to the individual, determine what we shall benefit
during the conflicts, who is behind and what role individuals are playing in
the conflicts and defy any other action that is towards segregating individual
and tribe from leaders. These would guide them in the relationship with other
members of the community in analyzing the kind of message and information
leaders and individuals share with other.
