CIVIL SOCIETY ORGANISATIONS SHOW CASE THEIR INNOVATIONS AT THE 3RD ANNUAL FAIR

For the last three years in Uganda, CSOs have gathered to share ideas, innovation and learn from one another as one way of enhancing a vibrant CSOs sector in the country.

This year’s National CSOs fair held on 4th- 5th July was organized by National NGO Forum & DENIVA among others under the theme: “Our country, Our Dignity, My Duty”. The fair brought on board NGOs, faith based organizations, CBOs and private sector at National, regional and District level s exhibiting   the best from their institutions. As a representative of R IC-NET, I concentrated on sourcing information from the stalls that could be repackaged    for a better livelihood of the citizens in the Rwenzori region & beyond. Centre for participatory research and development, An NGO implementing a waste management project displayed   innovative technology  of producing charcoal briquettes as an alternative source of fuel compared to the traditional way of firewood and charcoal.

Briquettes on display
The charcoal briquettes are produced by recycling bio degradable waste as banana peelings, charcoal dust and clay. Linking the high rate of population growth, demand for firewood with un matched tree planting it’s important that the   use of briquettes is widely promoted as it’s affordable and cheaper for institutions and homes, and above all saves the environment. According to the Centre for participatory research and development, an average briquette costs between 1500/= and lasts for eight hours, they are also available in different sizes and prices.

The youth also had a wonderful time with the President of FDC,  Major  General Mugisha Muntu   as they interracted in a dialogue meeting on issues of politics, intergrity and how current leaders are setting a good example for the youth in this country.

The participants also made the fair attractive through the exhibitions of Art and craft, dialogue meetings, eats and refreshments till the closure  on 5th July.
