FORT-PORTAL MUNICIPALITY TO BENEFIF FROM A WORLD BANK FUNDING

Yesterday afternoon, 15th November representatives of the municipality, CSOs, Business community, political leaders, bankers from Fort-portal town met at St Joseph’s Inn Virika, to form a Municipal Development Forum, a body that will be  overseeing the implementation of a long term infrastructure development  plan for Fort-portal and ensure value for every money spent. While opening the meeting His worship, the Mayor Edson Ruyonga noted that with the limited funding Fort-portal has grown from strength to a level of planning for a city, and now  with the heavy funding from the World Bank the dream of  making Fort-portal a city would be realized. He however called upon the members of the Forum to frequently share information and plan for the sustainability of the project as early as possible.
During the main presentation from the ministry of lands, Housing and urban Development, Mr. Kasimbazi David, noted that the municipal infrastructure Development (USMID) project  is a five year based project  meant to enhance the institutional development in urban planning and more so infrastructure development. He challenged the participants that what we see today is a plan of 50 years back and thus the municipality should be able to plan how it will look like in the next 50 years he explained that all this requires capacity development for the human resource , partly that the funding will be tagged to.he asked the members  why they were setting up buildings of 10metres yet other countries as Japan have  set up buildings  200 metres high ? All this is possible when other stakeholders  realize there is a good plan to contribute to and that’s the reason the Forum  representation is  from different stakeholders, lastly the participants elected members of the Municipality Development Forum who comprised  of CSOs,religious leaders, business community among others to draw the road map for the project and oversee its implementation.
