RIC-NET SELECTS NEW BENEFICIARIES FOR PHASE TWO CONFLICT AFFECTED GIRLS PROJECT

SOME GIRLS FROM SEMULIKI HIGH SCHOOL

RIC-NET is seeking new applicants for the second phase of the global fund for children project that targets conflict affected girls both in and out of school.

These interviews for the second phase were carried out at Semulki high school Bundibugyo district on 27th may 2015,  where a number of 51 girls were met and introduced to the project.

In addition to filling in the forms that were developed from the new selection criteria, the selection team went further to prove if what was indicated in the forms was true about the applicants. The applicants were told to write a true story about how they were affected by the conflict which the team will go ahead to verify and further verification will be done by visiting the families of those applicants who will have gone through the first verification.

The applicants were given an introduction about the project, as a project that targets and aims at supporting conflict affected girls with psycho social support and mentoring of the girls, counseling, reproductive health and provision of scholastic and sanitary materials to conflict affected in school girls.

The selection criteria for the new beneficiaries was also read out for the girls and to the female teachers who were present so as to understand it fully and a young girl must be falling in the criteria below:

Must be:

§  A young girl aged 16-22 years

§  A resident of the Rwenzori region: in the districts of Kasese, Ntoroko and Bundibugyo that have been severely affected by rebel attacks and ADF war.

§  Have been directly or indirectly affected by any rebel activities also the ADF war.

§  An orphan with a real mother or father or both having been killed during the war and has no source of stable livelihood or support for education.

§  She was abducted during war, lived with rebels in the bush and later escaped.

§  She was either injured and disabled or raped during war and now has a baby needs support.

§  She was left without guardian or parents and taken to a refuge or internal displaced peoples (IDP) camps.

§  Has a dream of continuing with school / acquiring vocational skills for self sustainable livelihood.

§  Could be in school or out of school

 So, any young girl who fits in some on the above criteria should contact a local leader in your area or information centre near you or religious leaders or directly contact RIC-NET project officer.

Support for Conflict affected Girls in Rwenzori region avaialbe.

RIC-NET with support from GLOBAL FUND FOR CHILDREN has been supporting some conflict affected girls since June 2014 with livelihood skills trainings, psychosocial support, mentoring, and scholastic materials.

The 2^nd batch recruitment exercise starts in May-June 2015 for 40 girls out of school and 75 girls in schools located in Kasese, Bundibugyo and Ntoroko Districts.

Some criteria to consider include:

ü  Must be a young girl aged 16-22 years

ü  Resident of the Rwenzori region particularly Kasese, Ntoroko and Bundibugyo Districts that have been severely affected by rebel attack and ADF war.

ü  Have been directly or indirectly affected by any rebel activities also the ADF war.

RIC-NET will verify the claims made by the young girls by getting recommendations from local LC 1 or religious leaders or head of schools. Visit homes where the girl currently lives and talk to close relatives or guardian and neighbors.

So, any young girl who fits in some on the above criteria should contact a local leader in your area or information centre near you or religious leaders or directly contact RIC-NET project officer.

TEACHERS AND TUTORS IMPRESSED WITH MONTHLY ICT SUPPORT.

RIC-NET staff has been moving around the schools offering training and capacity building to teachers of English in Schools of Kasese.16 teachers (6 female and 10 males) and 3 tutors (1 Female and 2 males) have been participating in these monthly trainings.

The purpose of the monthly support to teacher was to improve capacity and mentorship. The issues handled were purposely meant to; improve the quality of lesson preparation and presentation by the teachers and Offer a one stop point to handle one on one problem of each teacher.

The capacity building helped to handle Individual teacher’s problems with regard to use of ICT in lesson preparation especially the teacher’s competency to use and apply ICT tools in lesson preparation. Ms Hellen Mbambu of St Charles SS Kasanga agreed that the monthly mentorship have Motivated her and other teachers to accept the dynamic teaching environment.

On the other hand Teachers able to review the lessons of others in the same department, setting joint monthly tests across and reviewing monthly outputs in terms of lesson planning and presentations. An agreement to shares monthly exams and support each other in marking was reached and agreed upon by all the teachers.

TEACHERS SHOW CASE THE ICT INNOVATIVE METHODS OF TEACHING

On 8^th March 2015 At St Thereza teachers and students show cased their ICT skills to the members of the management committees. On those days students showed their ICT skills they have acquired through. 14 (3 female and 5 males. 2 Rev.fr and 4 Sister’s) School management committees’ members attended the event in the school.

Mr. Felix Kule a Head of department at the school show cased how ICT innovations have boosted confidence among the learner by presenting a lesson using simple photos from around the school compound. On the other hand the students presented the some of the poems learnt from Teacher Edith.

Members of the management agreed to support and lobby both Government and private sector for more equipments and technologies. Among those highlighted was the inter-com technology to boost communication in the offices, software to support academic office in managing students’ examination marks and reports and ability of parents to view then online.

Management team also agreed to include ICT in their planning for next month’s budget. However many activities in the day limited the time the teachers and students would show case more ICT skills.

A new exciting program for the Children

Having finalised Scratch in April a program sponsored by Level up Village, RICNET has started on yet another exciting program sponsored by the same organisation.
The program has been pioneered at St.Charles Voc. Sec School in Bwera-Kasese District. This comes shortly after a computer programming class called scratch that students of Fort Portal S.S enjoyed as they created/programmed their own games. Instead of playing already compiled computer games they programmed them and thus giving them an exciting moment to work with computers.

Mine craft is yet another exciting moment with the students of St. charles Voc. S.S as they learn how to be creative and constructive during their lessons. The program that allows students login to the minecraft interface the world helps them create several objects including houses, fences, animals of their choice and many more. There Plots of land withing the minecraft world where they are allowed to construct their houses and on the same plot of land their partners in the the other country like the U.S construct on the same plot of land and so they can exchange ideas through that.
